Written and recorded during UK lockdown, March 2020.
This track was inspired by the 1986 film of the same name, which we watched for the first time at the beginning of the lockdown period. If you haven't seen it, seek it out - it's a seriously underrated little movie which pulls off a neat trick that precious few High School films of the era dared try, which is treat teenage life with the utmost seriousness.
(We should probably point out that this song does contain spoilers of sorts in the lyrics, but they're hopefully sufficiently cryptic for this not to impact on a first viewing!)
lyrics
Lucas, what’s up? You’ve got no sense at all
Out on the field, chasing after the ball
Lucas, wise up, you had no chance at all
Eyes on redemption and back to the wall
Just wait a while, little insect
For that which you adore
For what you think is good, and pure
Gestate a while, little insect
The larva will mature
And soon it will emerge transformed…
Then they all came down
The sky came down
The band laid down in the quiet now
In seventeen years
I’ll still be here
A whole life left just to save your fears
They paid the price
in dim headlights
A locust swarm on a warm summer night
’Cos they see plague
Where you see change
But don’t ever go home…
Lucas, wake up – you’ve got no chance at all
Later ascension, but first comes the fall
One day to come, I know you’ll show them all
But Lucas, it seems, never catches the ball…
